Why does my steering wheel shake?

That's one of more common questions we're asked at the front counter of our shop.  First question we have to ask the customer is when do you feel the shake.  Is it only at certain speeds or when applying the brakes?  If it only shakes at certain speeds, its most likely a tire balance or out of round issue. We would still recommend checking the front suspension to verify that there are no worn out bushings and or shocks or struts causing it.  Some times the front end could be out of alignment and causing the tires to cup or wear uneven.

If the steering wheel shakes while braking, its most likely caused by warped front brake rotors.  If the brake rotors become too thin or over heater, it can cause the brake rotors or brake discs to become warped. this in turn will cause the steering wheel to vibrate or shake when brakes are applied.  It would be advised  to have the front suspension bushings checked with that issue too.  Some of the BMW thrust arm bushing can cause steering wheel shake while braking if there in bad shape.
